Duke Captures 2K Classic Title

Grayson Allen scored 32 points and No. 5/4 Duke withstood a late Georgetown rally to earn an 86-84 win and take the championship of the 2K Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project at Madison Square Garden.
Allen was named Continental Tire MVP for averaging 31 points in the two games at The Garden. In the title game, Allen was 9-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-6 from three, and 9-of-9 from the line. The 62 points are a Championship Rounds record.
Derryck Thornton, who joined Allen on the all-tournament team, scored 14 points with Matt Jones tallying 11. Amile Jefferson added eight points and eight rebounds.
Georgetown was led by Isaac Copeland who had 21 points and six rebounds in earning a spot on the all-tournament team. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Kaleb Johnson scored 14 points apiece while L.J. Peak totaled 13 points.
The title is Duke’s second 2K Classic championship. The Blue Devils last won in 2008.
In the consolation match, Bronson Koenig’s layup with 5.9 second left gave Wisconsin a 74-73 win over VCU.
Koenig ended the contest with 22 points. Ethan Happ posted his second double-double of the Championship Rounds with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Happ’s performance placed him on the all-tournament team. Nigel Hayes and Zak Showalter each scored 10 points with Showalter also pulling down six rebounds.
Melvin Johnson led VCU with 21 points en route to all-tournament team laurels. Korey Billbury netted 17 points and Ahmad Hamdy Mohamed posted 13 points and eight rebounds.
A crowd of 17,287 attended the championship doubleheader. With Friday’s attendance of 18,238, 35,525 fans attended the two days of basketball at Madison Square Garden.
