UConn and Iowa win 2K Empire Classic openers

In Storrs, the Dan Hurley Era started on a winning note as UConn took an 80-70 decision from Morehead State in the 2K Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.
Josh Carlton (pictured) was one of four Huskies to reach double figures, netting 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field to go along with eight rebounds. Jalen Adams tallied 16 points, Alterique Gilbert had 15 points, and Tarin Smith tallied 12 points. Christian Vital posted eight points and eight rebounds.
Morehead State was paced by Lamontray Harris and his 16 points and 13 rebounds. Malek Green netted 14 points, Jordan Walker had 13 points, De’von Cooper scored 11 points, and James Baker added 10 points.
As a team, UConn shot 31-of-64 (.484) from the field. The Eagles were 25-of-62 (.403).
In Iowa City, Joe Wieskamp scored 15 points to lead four Hawkeyes in double figures as Iowa captured a 77-63 win over UMKC.
Tyler Cook posted 12 points and eight rebounds for the Hawkeyes, who also received 12 points from Jordan Bohannon and 11 points from Maishe Dailey.
The Kangaroos were led by Xavier Bishop and Brandon McKissic, each of whom tallied 14 points.
Defensively, Iowa limited UMKC to 35.9 shooting from the floor (23-of-64) while outscoring the Kangaroos 28-8 from the foul line.
2K Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project resumes on Friday when No. 14 Oregon hosts Eastern Washington.
Syracuse, UConn, Iowa, and Oregon will travel to New York to participate in the Championship Rounds presented by Continental Tire of the 2K Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project. The Orange and Huskies renew their storied rivalry in the first semifinal round game on Thursday, Nov. 15 at Madison Square Garden, followed by the Ducks and Hawkeyes. The consolation and championship games will then be played on Friday, Nov. 16.
